Elgin is a small town in Kershaw County on the northeast edge of the Columbia metro, along US-1, SC-262 and I-20. It is a short drive to Fort Jackson and to the shops in Northeast Columbia, and much quieter once you are there.
The appeal is space. Elgin has older homes on generous lots in town, newer subdivisions along US-1 toward Lugoff and Camden and SC-262 toward Pontiac, and homes on acreage with room for a shop, a garden or animals.
Elgin is served by the Kershaw County School District, including Lugoff-Elgin High School. Some homes near the county line are in Richland County instead, so we check the county and schools for each address.
Homes outside the town limits often have a well and septic system, which changes the inspection. We plan for that from the start.
