The gateway to Lake Murray.
Irmo is a town about 12 miles northwest of downtown Columbia that sits in both Lexington and Richland counties. Its motto calls it the gateway to Lake Murray, and the lake, the dam and Saluda Shoals Park are all close by. It is also known for the Okra Strut, a town festival that started in 1973.
Irmo is served by Lexington-Richland School District Five, and that is a big reason families choose it. The wider Irmo area — often called the Dutch Fork — includes neighborhoods with a Columbia or Chapin mailing address that are also in District Five.
The housing is mostly established subdivisions from the 1970s onward, with mature trees, plus newer neighborhoods further out toward the lake. Harbison, on the Irmo side of I-26, has most of the shopping and restaurants.
I-26 is the commute into Columbia. It gets busy at rush hour, so we check the drive from each home at the time you would actually make it.
